Jim
Hahn Elected Mayor of Los Angeles!
On June 5, Jim Hahn was elected Mayor of Los Angeles and Contract Negotiations
should be close to conclusion as we go to press. This is more than coincidence,
as the elected Chapter Board endorsed Jims candidacy because he
has been a public employee for almost three decades and We knew
what wed be getting with Jim, states Chapter President Lorna
Ward.
She continued, As long as he is Mayor, City workers will not have
to be looking over their shoulders to see if the Mayor is trying to privatize
their work, and that alone will be a big relief.

Local 777 and Local 300 members turned out big for Get Out The
Vote day on the Saturday before June 5, Election Day for Jim Hahn!
Lobby Day
(Continued
from page 1)
Senator Ray Haynes absent. Senator Haynes is one of our Riverside County
legislators so lets encourage him to vote in our favor on this bill!
In an earlier Committee vote Assemblyman Rod Pacheco also voted against
AB 616, and, if you live in his district, you should write him a letter
letting him know how unhappy you are with his vote.
The author, Assemblymember Thomas Calderon, attended a breakfast meeting
hosted by Local 777, and thanked everyone for their support.
As we go to press we have learned that the Senate Appropriations Committee
will hear the Bill on August 20, 2001. We need lots of letters written
to the members of the Committee and to the Senator who represents YOUR
District. When you write a letter to your Senator or a committee member
please be sure to send a copy to Assemblymember Calderons office,
as they keep a tally on the number of letters that have been generated.
If you need help with your letter or have questions, please contact Kathie
Delgado by email at kathy@liuna777.org. or by phone at 909-682-4590, Ext.
212.
Work And Family
Committee Issues Recommendations
Early last year the state legislature allocated $5 million to fund the
efforts of the Work and Family Advisory Committee. Composed of 15 labor
representatives and 15 management representatives, the group spent the
past year gathering information about work and family policies and practices
in California and elsewhere, studying employees circumstances and preferences.
The needs assessment revealed that 44 percent of workers have at least
one dependent child, 15 percent care for both adult and child dependents,
and 50 percent expect to be responsible for an adult dependent within
the next five years. Employees reported a need, in decreasing order of
importance, for time off for family member illness, flexibility in work
hours, time off for routine medical appointments, and time off for children's
school related activities.
The report also recommends creation of a permanent Work and Family Labor/Management
Committee and the establishment of Work and Family Program representatives
at each department, agency, board, and commission throughout the state.
