“I want to take this opportunity to thank Teresa for providing excellent service for Julie and I. We needed some documents notarized on short notice. We made an appointment and saved over $80 by using the union’s free service at the Riverside office. This is just another example of the benefits of being a UPEC member,” Lori Neddermann, County of Riverside Department of Animal Control.

Health And Safety Tips

If you sit in front of a computer all day, then you are at risk for wrist problems, eyestrain and neck and back pain. Avoid injury with these simple tips:
* Place your monitor directly in front of you, so that it is at eye-level. Don’t sacrifice neck and back health for space by placing your keyboard and monitor off to the side of your desk.
* Keep an eye out for glare. If you find that you’re seeing

bright reflections or glare from your monitor, consider purchasing a glare screen, adjusting the lighting in your office or moving your desk.
* Prevent wrist strain by buying a wrist pad or positioning your mouse so that your elbow is always at a 90-degree angle. Your wrist should always be in a neutral position. In other words, the knuckles, wrist, and top of the forearm should form a straight line.
* Adjust your chair so that your feet are flat on the ground. If you cannot adjust your chair, buy a footrest.
* Take breaks from your work by standing up or shifting position every 15 minutes or so. And be sure to give your eyes a rest by looking away from the screen every few minutes.
Each year 1.8 million workers in the United States report work-related musculo-skeletal disorders such as carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis and back injuries. Don’t let it happen to you!

Reinstatement And Full Back Pay for Sally Hazell!

Sally Hazell, an Admissions and Collections clerk working at the Banning Clinic, was involuntarily transferred to Palm Springs and demoted to an Office Assistant II when management discovered that for years, due to her personal religious convictions, she had been able to personally avoid processing abortion related-billing.

She contacted her UPEC Representative, Linda Jefferson, and together a grievance was filed.

At Step I of the grievance procedure, the Human Resources Analyst ruled in favor of Sally, restoring all of the back pay she had lost, and placing her in Patient Accounts Billing, at the Riverside County Regional Medical Center, where she is comfortable working.

We're Ranked 31 Out Of 9,170!

We were recently notified by one of our members that she was researching her Skelly Rights (your right to representation by the union if you are called into an investigatory meeting by management that could lead to discipline) on the web and while using the search engine: www.google.com and typing in the words Skelly Rights she found that the union’s web site: www.liuna777.org came up with her answer, listed as result number 31 out of 9,170 numbers displayed.

This remarkable breakthrough is also due to the spirit of Labor-Management cooperation that has been taking place for at least three years now,” reports Business Manager Fred Lowe. He continued, “With the decision by Supervisor Tom Mullen not to run for re-election, it is the responsibility of every UPEC member to get involved in the upcoming election for a new member of the Board of Supervisors to ensure that we continue in this same direction.”
