Housing Authority Becomes Part Of Riverside County

On May 3, the Board of Supervisors approved the transfer of Riverside County

Once UPEC learned they would be representing these workers, a meeting
was scheduled with a UPEC Representative so that they would have a better understanding of their rights.

Two More Grievance Victories!

UPEC Representative Dee De Jong reports that two grievances in the Department of Child  Support Services have been resolved.

The first affected David Wilson, who the Department has agreed to reimburse after first making him use his personal time taken on March 12,2001. The Supervisor has been advised that personal time does not have to be taken when testing or interviewing for the County of Riverside.

The other grievance affected Lob Dora who was inappropriately asked to bring in a doctor’s note. The Supervisor is now aware that a doctor’s note is only required when an employee is on medical certification or has been out for at least two weeks.

Bring Your Daughters to Work Day Celebrated!

In honor of National Bring Your Daughters to Work Day, Treasurer-Tax Collector Paul McDonnell invited employees in the Department to bring their children to work with them, and asked UPEC to be a co-sponsor. The response was tremendous. On Thursday, April 26, 2001 nearly 60 children took over the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s office.
Each child spent part of the day helping employees with their work and were amazed at the variety of duties their parents are responsible for. They learned how tax payments are processed and had the opportunity to trade stock.
The day included lunch with pizza and ice cream paid for in part by UPEC, followed by a really big treat. All the children went to meet Deputy Sheriff Bill Davis and his canine partner, Carlo. The kids were full of questions for Deputy Davis and the dog “lapped up” all the attention he received! But, the best part of the day was when Deputy Davis arrested Paul McDonnell. Paul was handcuffed and placed in the back of the police car amid cheers from the kids. Of course, he was released without charges as it was all done in good fun!
